What do YOU think?

September 29th, 2011

In the past few days we have examined 9 events that eventually led us to fighting the Revolutionary war, in an attempt to gain independence from Britain.

What event do you think caused the most unrest in the colonies? What event do you think caused the least? Do you think we could have avoided the war, yet still gained inddpendence?

Tell me what you think! Answer any (or all) of the questions above in a thoughtful post, and earn class points! Don’t forget…first names ONLY!

What is something you did this summer that you will always remember?

August 1st, 2011

Greetings to my incoming 7th grade class!

I know that we haven’t met yet, but I am excited to start sharing about our summer, since personal histories are part of what make Social Studies so relevant and exciting!  To that end, I would like you to take a minute to think about your summer, and answer the question: “What is something you did this summer that you will always remember?”  These events will become part of your own personal history.

This summer, I visited Italy, and I stood in the Roman Colosseum, overlooking the ruins of the former Roman forum.  I stood where great Roman emperors, gladiators, and unfortunate victims had stood. Julius Caesar could have walked on the very stones where I had walked!  With a little imagination, I could feel the history connecting us as I looked out over Colosseum grounds.  While I was there, I  thought about the incredible amount of ingenuity it must have taken the builders of this ancient wonder to create a building that still stands more than 2,000 years later. It made me wonder if buildings like Fanueil Hall, the Old North Church, and Paul Revere’s house, all in Boston, would still be standing in 1,700 years.   I was impressed, and it is something I will always remember.

What did you do this summer?  You may not have visited a foreign country, but you may have gone to the beach, gone to the lake, climbed a mountain, or visited family; all of which are events that are shaping your own history.

Once school starts, and after you have permission forms signed, you will be given the opportunity to create your own blog posts about what we have been doing in class. Until then, why not try commenting? Using the “comments” link below, please take a minute to share something that you did this summer that you will always remember.  You will need to enter a name (first name, last initial only) and it will ask you for a an email address, but one is not required. To protect privacy, please sign your post using only your first name.

Happy trails!

Welcome to the Baker Blog!  This will be a student-maintained blog that details what happened in class, connections that students are making to what we are learning, and hopefully a bit of fun and humor as well.  Check back often!
